Blog Love: Lit Fuse + My Baby Bike

It's become something of a habit to walk around the corner to the Lit Fuse Cyclery on Willoughby Avenue (by the Home Depot) in Clinton Hill/Bed Stuy. I was taking the long way back home from Duane Reade when I saw the door of this building wide open. What the hell, what is a bike shop doing on this block? Tis ghet n' stuff out hurr! I had no intention of claiming a bike that day, but home-dizzle Damian could do no wrong. He showed me a number of bikes and saved the best for freaking last; behold my baby silver Fuji in Damian's latest bike shop post. It took a lot of work on both our parts.

I was so happy that they were flexible and let me pay $25/week to hold my bike. It took most of the Summer, but I own her now! LFC does repairs, refubs and new custom jobs. Look out, we might be parnering up for some end of Summer shindigs y'all ! Check it! Lit Fuse had a 4th of July party with Japanther, Ghost Mall and Ninjasonik!

Poverty Picnic: Glazed Guava Biscuits

I don't work in a restaurant anymore, so all of my free meals went *schooom* out the window. Inspired by the canned mystery products in my pantry and Adam Pollock's $50/week, I will be bringing you relatively easy-to-make snacks that are cheap and long lasting! I know I have a good dish when I finish it and say, "I'm going to hell for this." Trust me, this one doesn't have bacon. In fact, it's vegetarian friendly. Check out my Glazed Guava Biscuits n' Raspberries: Supplies you will need for this mission:
1 tube of ready-made biscuit dough -$1.50, 10 pieces. Go for flaky-layer, buttery stuff. You'll see why later.
1 tub of Guava Paste - $3.99. You can find this in any Mexican foods aisle. Lasts a long time in the fridge.
1/4 cup of Molasses -$3.09. If you're not a fan, go for Maple syrup (but that isn't so cheap) or try corn syrup.
1.5 tablespoons of butter - $2.69. You're going to hate me for this.
1 teaspoon of cinnamon -$0.79
Handful of washed raspberries - $3.99. Any berry will work, really.
A cast iron pan
Oven at 400 degrees!

For the glaze! Put the molasses, cinnamon and butter in a heat safe bowl and place it on the middle/back of the stove top. While the oven is pre-heating, it will melt the mixture together. Just stir it up into a smooth brown glaze when it melts.

Cut ten 1-inch squares of guava paste. Pop open the biscuit dough and make sure all the biscuits will fit in to the pan, it's ok if they touch but don't squishy them. Put any extras in a baggie and freeze it for later. Now this is why you want flaky layers: peel half of the biscuit off and place the square of guava paste in there.
Once you're all assembled, bake that pan o' goodness for about 9 minutes. You'll smell the biscuits and the tops should be slightly brown. Wash some berries while you wait. When it's done, drizzle that molasses glaze over the biscuits and just dump the berries on top. It'll sizzle a little, so wait until it stops to shove it in your mouth. Guava paste can get very very hot, so be careful.
Is the money where my mouf is? If you don't have any of these ingredients, it costs $16.09 to make. That's about $1.61 per biscuit, seems cost effective to me! Since I already had some ingredients, this dish really cost me $8.58 at $.86 per biscuit. If you try it, let me know how it goes!

Tour: Nullsleep Embarks on Disaster Fetish Tour 2k9

Homeboy Jeremiah Johnson is taking off this week for Europe! Peep his Blip 2007 video by 2pp:

Nullsleep // Blip Festival 2007: The Videos from 2 Player Productions on Vimeo.

During the Summer of 2009 (often referred to as The Black Summer) a series of coordinated high-powered, low-bit audio assaults were carried out upon the European continent. The 8bitpeoples claimed responsibility for these attacks, orchestrated by Nullsleep, with the assistance of a fiercely dedicated coalition of chip musicians. Between July 9 and August 6, they carved a path of destruction through half a dozen major cities - with rumors of brutal data corruption dance parties in several more. The world economic market collapsed within two hours of the first attack, and by the third week, space-time had begun devouring itself in a violent display recalling the quantum states of Ouroboros. Party while you're still living.

Facts N' Chese Episode 4: Fourme d'Ambert

Facts N' Cheese Episode 4: Fourme d'Ambert from BLT / IDM on Vimeo.

Welcome to Facts n' Cheese! It's like Mac n' Cheese, but not! Join me on my awkward trek through cheeses of the world. In each episode, I'm joined by a friend and I make them eat cheese while I spout out all I know about a particular curd conglomeration. Special thanks to Jeff Stockton for designing our logo as well as Ryan Darrenkamp, Lisa Uhlman and Vance Spicer for their beer, house, camera equipment and editing!

Episode 4 features French Fourme d'Ambert, my blue shirted friend Ryan Darrenkamp and the song "Hadean Days" by Natty. Sorry, I talk with my mouth full at the end!

Additional facts about Fourme d'Ambert:
  • This is what fourme d'ambert looks like. Most blue cheeses comes wrapped in foil, so you should wrap this one in foil when you get home to avoid sweating the cheese and creating more mold.
  • Fourme d'ambert is inoculated with Penicillium roqueforti spores and aged for at least 28 days. During this aging time, at weekly intervals, the cheese is injected with Vouvray moelleux, one of my more favorite wines!
  • The Auvergne region of France has many dormant volcanoes, the last one erupted over 6,000 years ago!
  • There is a museum that features fourme d'ambert! Crazy!

Article: Seattle Weekly's "And you will know us by the trail of German butterballs"

Wonderful article from Jonathan Kauffman:
"Our generation is addicted to keeping up with the entire planet—in real time, no less—yet we nurse a deep romance for anything that helps us feel anchored in the here and now. And the seasonality of local foods is just as significant an element of their specificity."
###

It's the same branding magic that occurs in the indie-music scene. As Michael Jaworski—singer for the Cops, owner of Mt. Fuji Records (Maldives, Whore Moans), and Sunset Tavern booker—puts it: '[We're] people who love to find things, people who are attracted to something a little more interesting than cookie-cutter, top-40 mass-media pop. Not that I can't appreciate a well-written pop song, but I feel much better when I'm supporting something more honest and genuine, not huge marketing machines. It feels really satisfying to be part of something that is starting out, and not so huge—when you feel like there's a stronger connection between you and whoever's making the music.'

Event: The Young & Hungry Met BLT/IDM?

I made my way to Soho in the crazy torrential rain. I was lost, wet and carrying a bunch of cheese to the Young and Hungry launch party. The plates ended up looking great! I brought two kinds of Manchego (3 month/1 year), Robiola and my very own Paprika Garlic aged goat cheese. You can catch a photo of me in the Young and Hungry recap! It was really nice to catch up with my friend Tommy over some plates of Mama's fried chicken. I loved the boiled peanuts, exactly like the ones grandma used to make! Were you there? Hope you got to try the goat cheese!

Yawen Chen took a couple photos for us:"I'm on the menu?"
