Event: The Young and Hungry Launch Party
I'm super excited about tomorrow's launch party for The Young and Hungry! Yours truly will be schlepping together some cheese plates for the occasion. Think of The Young and Hungry as BLT / IDM's hungrier, judgmental (restaurant ratings!), rock star older brother. Peep their lil' bite about the Brooklyn Salsa Company.
"We are young (early 20's) and hungry (for knowledge! music! art! food!) friends living on (or in areas which border) Manhattan. We moved to the city seeking higher education, and an alternative to frat parties and gin buckets. We prefer a bottle of Chianti to a keg, lunches at City Bakery to a dining hall, Joe's to Starbucks, Frankie's Amatriciana to Batali's. Our uniting factor is our love for food."

Grocery Challenge - $40 No Bread Diet
In light of recent health and monetary concerns, I decided not to eat out this week. My friend Elisa was so inspired to follow in the footsteps of our dear Brooklyn cohort, Cathy from Not Eating Out in NY. Let's see how many things I can come up with! Note that I didn't buy any BREAD or CHEESE. A crime for me, isn't it?
The ingredients for the week: crescent roll dough, breadstick dough, watermelon chunks, shitake mushrooms, catfish, broccolini, chives, California slaw, sage sausage, chicken drumsticks, couscous, boneless mackeral in water and little steaks.
Experimental Cusine Collective -June
My friend Maian and I joined the Experimental Cuisine Collective for their June meeting, "Liquid Smoke: A Chemical Cesspool or an All-Natural Flavoring?" with Kent Kirshenbaum. It was a lecture style seminar held at the NYU Food Science kitchen. I noted familiar benzene rings on the handout that explained the chemical components of wood: cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin. Between amazing smoky snacks of crackers with cheese and paprika, ribs smoked three ways, Peat Monster scotch and liquid nitrogen s'more ice cream-- Kent made liquid smoke with sawdust, glass beaker, bubbler and blowtorch! It was really cool to meet other molecular gastronomy geeks!

The piece was inspired by Alvin Toffler's book "Future Shock" -- a phenomenon he described as a "shattering stress and disorientation" brought on by unbearably rapid social/technological change.

Welcome to Facts n' Cheese! It's like Mac n' Cheese, but not! Join me on my awkward trek through cheeses of the world. In each episode, I'm joined by a friend and I make them eat cheese while I spout out all I know about a particular curd conglomeration. Episode 3 features St. Hannois, our faithful camera man Vance Spicer and the song "Danger Line" (Feat. J. Arthur Keenes) by DaPantz. I didn't let poor Vance talk during this one! I was nervous! Wahhhhhhh!
Additional facts about St. Hannois:
- FACT: I couldn't find anything about this cheese online! I even emailed the cheese shop. Anyone want to help a sistah out?
- St. Hannois and other goat cheeses shaped similarly are called crottin. Crottin means "horse turd" in French.
- Crottin is also diminutive of crotte, which is "dung" in German.
- Fresh crottin (not poop) is soft and smells like fresh dough.
- Aged crottin is hard and can have a semi-soft to hard flinty texture below that snowy mold bloom.
- If you can't find St. Hannois, try Crottin de Chavignol or Crottin de Champcol.

Our long-time friend Cousin Cole celebrated his 21st birthday (for the 10th time) last night at Savalas during his regular party, Panty Raid! It was a good time and I saw Dances with White Girls actually dance with white girls! Really nice to hug the homedeez Cole and Skooby after my all-too-long hiatus from the dance floor.
