Drinks: Beerlao Celebrates Songkran (Thai New Year)

I recently learned about this awesome Laotian beer, Beerlao. This week is สงกรานต์ or Songkran, Thai New Year (April 13-15th). Drinking beer to celebrate the occasion seems appropriate because there is a New Year's tradition of drenching passerbys with waterguns and hoses in Southeast Asia. Songkran is also a time for cleaning and renewal. Beerlao's brewmaster is a woman! Wall Street Journal spoke to Sivilay Lasachack about how she started making beer.

Yo! I can't wait to bring out my broken Casios and toys for the 6th annual Bent Festival at the Tank this week. Peep the video above for some education, featuring a small noisy tidbit from Daedalus! Sadly, he will not be performing this year.

Video: RPM Enthusiast John Katchmer Talks about Smoke Taint

Smoke Taint Affects California Wines from Christina Salerno on Vimeo.

John Katchmer is a dear friend and electronic DJ at KRCB a community radio station in Santa Rosa, CA. Ah, wine country! Christina Salerno reports on how smoke taint from the California "Summer of Fire" had an effect on the wine production in Northern California. You catch John's radio show "Open Space District" online on Sundays from 10pm to 11pm, PST. Check out his playlists! On Sunday he spun Sebastian Tellier and The Branflakes! No wonder we're friends...

Video - "La Roux - "In For the Kill" @ Studio B

"Is it time?" I exclaimed when the Nick Catchdubs lowered the master volume on his DJ set. I grabbed my roommates and rushed to the front of the stage to the beginning beats of La Roux's "In For the Kill." For her U.S.A. debut, she bounded from backstage with a giant red cow-lick, Bowie blue eye shadow and ruffly mariachi-like sleeves.

Pardon my swaying, I couldn't help it. Watch out San Francisco friends, she's coming to Popscene on April 9th!

Video: WOODS -" To Clean" @ Death By Audio

I have to be honest. It was my first time seeing or hearing WOODS. During moments of both acidy static and sweet vocal tonality, I found myself grabbing my roommate's hand and swaying along. At the end of fuzzy falsetto-rich, "To Clean", the dudes added an incense invoked, seven minute jam.

WOODS - "To Clean" @ Death by Audio from BLT / IDM on Vimeo.

After the show my roommate and I harassed WOODS cassette tape manipulator, Lucas. The skinny is that WOODS will be going to play in Belgium and France, then return to the U.S. for their impending "Songs of Shame" album release on April 14th and May 10th Market Hotel show in Brooklyn.

Video: Tyvek - "Start/ Stop" @ Death By Audio

The last time I saw Tyvjk (formerly spelled Tyvek), I was standing next to a Sparks promotion girl in bright orange daisy dukes. At the end of their 2008 What's Your Rupture SxSw set, staged at Beerland- -a fight broke out. Some dude punched someone in the band and there was blood.

No blood was shed at last night's raucous Death by Audio show in Brooklyn. Only empty beer cans and errant
Juan Wauters of Brooklyn band, The Beets, invaded the stage. In a strange fit of full-circle closure, I indulged in a certain endangered energy malt beverage before I danced my ass off with a coven of close friends.

Tyvjk departs on a Spring European tour with 7"-mates Chevu after they play Bowery Ballroom with Asobi Seksu (April 2nd).

Bands: Kaia Wong (of Mixel Pixel) Offers Thai Massage in Brooklyn

Multi-talented Kaia Wong not only makes music with Mixel Pixel! She makes her own line of lip balms and soaps AND practices Thai massage! She says,
Receiving Thai massage is a wonderful experience. During a 60, 90, or 120 minutes session I realign all muscle groups in your body through soft and deep touch in a flowing sequence. It's relaxing and invigorating. Some people say it's like yoga without having to do yoga.
I have no patience for yoga and sticking my butt in the air. I think I'll go with a massage from Kaia.
She will make same day visits! Can you imagine playing a show in Brooklyn and getting a massage before your set?

For rates or to schedule a session, you can email her.
